ELEMENTS OF ART
The elements of art are the building blocks used by artists to create a work of art. These can be thought of as the things that make up a painting, drawing, sculpture, and any other form of visual art.
1. Line - is an extended mark with greater length than width. Lines can be straight, curved, zigzag, or scroll.
2. Shape - can be create when a line is enclosed.

3. Forms- are three-dimensional shapes expressing length, width, and depth. Balls,
cylinders, boxes, and pyramids are forms.

4. Space - is the area between and around objects. The space around objects is often
called negative space; negative space has shape. Space can also refer to the
feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional; in visual art, when we create
the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space.
The area occupied by the object (bird/black) on the artwork above is called as positive space, while the area/space or background (black) is referred to as negative space.
5. Color - is visual effect created by the light reflected off of objects. Color has three main characteristics: hue
(the name of the color, such as red, green, blue, etc.), value (how light or dark it
is), and intensity (how bright or dull it is).
Classification of Colors
a. Primary colors - the source of all other colors. these are colors; red, blue and yelow
b. Secondary colors - the combination of two equal primary colors. these are orange, green, and violet
c. Tertiary colors - the combination of one primary color and one secondary color with equal amount. these are; red-violet, red-orange, blue-green, blue-violet, yellow-green, and yellow-orange.
The relationship between all these colors is best shown in the color wheel;
6. Texture - Texture is the surface quality that can be seen and felt. Textures can be rough or
smooth, soft or hard.
